Trustees
and advisors
Our trustees hold the legal responsibility for REUK's work; they meet quarterly to make key decisions. REUK's advisors are experts in their fields, who provide ongoing governance and strategic advice.
Mark is a coach, consultant and social entrepreneur with 30 years’ experience running companies and coaching leaders from business and third sector organisations. He was the co-founder of Studio Schools, and is currently a founder and director at Form, and a trustee of The Mercian Trust (a multi-academy trust in the West Midlands).
Mr Mark Harland (Chair)
Emily is Deputy Director for Strategy at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, with a particular focus on girls, education and youth. She has worked in the civil service for 20 years, and has extensive experience of working in many of the countries of origin, leading on DFID operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq. She has also worked on structuring and establishing global aid financing for education in crisis contexts, and been a senior advisor on foreign policy.
Ms Emily Travis-Ribeiro MBE
David leads Jigsaw, an education research organisation and social enterprise based in London. He enjoys helping organisations build and use evidence to improve education provision and outcomes. He has worked in over 25 countries with a variety of donors, governments, UN agencies, INGOs and community-based organisations, overseeing a wide range of research studies and providing strategic advice across the sector. David has worked in education research for 15 years and has a PhD from the University of London (2010), and is Research Director for EdTech Hub.
Dr David Hollow
Mark moved into the charity sector in 2014, following a 20 year career in IT products and solutions, including in sales roles and senior management and director positions. In the voluntary sector, his responsibilities have largely focussed on finance, governance and premises portfolio management and he has been involved in several projects supporting the homeless and recovering addicts.
Mr Mark Nash (Treasurer)
Hiruy is an education in emergencies and anti-corruption specialist who helps organisations to define and operationalise their strategies - with a particular focus on good governance and complex humanitarian crises. He has worked for Transparency International, Plan International, VSO and has recently joined Jigsaw to lead on business development. Prior to moving to the UK, Hiruy worked for a number of humanitarian organisations, including UNICEF, in his home country of Ethiopia, coordinating country-wide emergency response plans and supporting the work of a number of government ministries.
Mr Hiruy Teka
Shna is the Director of Our Homes Matter, a design and build home refurbishment company, and mum to two young children. Previously, Shna worked in management positions for Ikea, and as an educational mentoring coordinator at REUK. Shna is Kurdish and was herself a child refugee, who understands first-hand the vital importance of education for refugee children.
Ms Shna Oleszczuk
Our newest trustee, Oyinda has recently graduated from Oxford University and works as a Financial Analyst at Goldman Sachs. Oyinda won the Female Undergraduate of the Year award 2022, a global scholarship to study in Korea as a teenager, and has been named a ‘Top 150 Future Leader in the UK by Powerlist Magazine. Oyinda moved to the UK from Nigeria when she was 5 years old, and is passionate about the role of education in helping people build new lives in new places.

Joy Johnston, Chair
Joy has worked for the UK government as a civil servant for the past ten years including in child protection, immigration and refugee resettlement.

Hiruy Teka
Hiruy has worked in humanitarian response and international development for the past 12 years. He currently works for Plan International UK as their Education in Emergencies Programme Specialist.
Karina Martin
Karina established and led refugee charities Upbeat Communities and Welcome Churches. She is now taking a break from two decades of working in the voluntary sector to study social innovation at Cambridge University.
Dr David Hollow
David is an international development consultant and Director of Jigsaw Consult. He also has a PhD in the monitoring and evaluation of education programmes, and lectures on Practicing Sustainable Development at Royal Holloway University.
Belinda Perriman
Belinda worked for Shell International for 15 years in technical, finance, and commercial positions, which included leading a large clean energy project. She is the founder of the social enterprise Kurdish House London.
Mark Harland
Mark is a consultant and social entrepreneur. Over his career, he has worked extensively with global brands including Cadbury and Jaguar, as well as supporting high growth SMEs to unlock their management team’s growth potential. Mark has more than 25 years’ experience in running businesses and coaching business and third sector leaders.
Shna Olesczcuk
Shna is a former Kurdish refugee raised in Finland. She lives in London with her husband and two children, and is passionate about enabling nations to meet their potential through diaspora youth. She used to work for REUK as an educational mentoring coordinator.
Advisors
Emily Travis MBE
Emily is the Deputy Head of Children, Youth and Education at the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO). She has previously worked in education in emergencies financing at Education Cannot Wait, and in a number of roles at the Department for International Development (DFID) and the Cabinet Office.
Amanda Gray
Amanda works in migration policy at the Overseas Development Institute. Before that, she worked for the International Rescue Committee where her roles focused on urban refugee policy and the Syrian regional response, and UNHCR UK where she worked on protection in the UK.
Chris Talbot
Chris Talbot is a global leader in the field of education in emergencies, conflict and post-conflict reconstruction. Now a consultant with agencies including UNICEF, GIZ, ODI, NRC and the Open Society Foundations, he was was formerly the Head of Education at UNHCR, and worked in senior education positions at UNESCO IIEP and Education Above All.
Dr Elaine Chase
Dr Elaine Chase is a Senior Lecturer at University College London Institute of Education and was formerly at the Oxford Institute of Social Policy. Her background is in policy-focused and participatory research, specialising in the wellbeing, health and rights of individuals and communities.
Rafe Offer
A celebrated authority in brand management and innovation, Rafe Offer has held senior positions with some of the world’s largest companies including Disney, Coca Cola, and Diageo.
Sandra Halilovic
Sandra is a senior finance professional who is passionate about helping organisations that are benefiting society. She is a Senior Investment Manager at Ceniarth, a global impact investment family-office. Sandra grew up as a refugee and is now a fellow of the Leaders Plus programme.
Pasha Michaelsen
Pasha worked as REUK's Head of Operations for five years. Previously, she worked at Big Society Capital, Challenge Partners and was a finance solicitor at Clifford Chance. She is vice-chair for the refugee charity Praxis and a trustee of IntoUniversity.
